Smackadoos Jazz-Rock Poster

Smackadoos is an imaginary Jazz-rock band, holding a concert in Silver Spring, MD. The goal of this assignment was to create a visually striking poster that communicates that this is an announcement for a jazz concert.
Process
After researching jazz and rock posters, I noticed that jazz designs often featured blue and yellow tones, saxophones, and curvy forms, while rock posters leaned into sharp edges and spiky shapes. Since the band combined both genres, with a stronger emphasis on jazz, I reflected these elements in my Procreate sketches: sharp letterforms, a spiky date highlight, diamond shapes in the “o”s and zeros, curving instruments, and flowing music emerging from a saxophone, all unified by a blue, yellow, and white palette.

Once satisfied with the sketch, I recreated it in Adobe Illustrator. A key challenge was fitting all the required information without making the layout feel cluttered. Initially, the band members’ names and instruments were placed below the address, which overwhelmed the bottom right corner. To resolve this, I integrated the names into the flowing music graphic, maintaining balance while enhancing the visual narrative.
